Taking Myself Out on a Date

I was having a bad day once and feeling kind of depressed, so I went to my grandma and cried to her about it. After comforting me a little, she told me, “Stephanie, in life, things around you won’t always be happy. Sometimes, you have to create your own happiness.”

This really stayed with me, and whenever I’m down, I feel a little more motivated when I remember her words and realize that I can do something about my sadness.

The purpose of this post is to share how I learned to create my own happiness by taking myself out on dates :).

Taking yourself out on a date is something that I recommend to everyone, whether you’re single or in a relationship. There’s something magical about making that space in your life to spend time with yourself, to take in the details around you, and to reflect on where you are in your life, where you’ve been, and where you want to be going.

I’ve taken myself out on a good share of dates in the past few years, and something I’ve learned is this: the things you do with friends or a significant other— you can also do on your own. This is something most people don’t realize!

These are some of my favorite ways to take myself out on a date:

Walk around Anthropologie with a nice tea/coffee

I do this when I’m having a bad day and need some inspiration. It always ends up making me feel better. Also, what better way to relax than go to a shop you can’t afford? You don’t have to worry about spending any money, and you’ll get to feel inspired by all the cute things you find :).

Maybe Anthropologie is not your thing? Go to a shop that inspires you! I know people who enjoy walking around plant/gardening stores. What inspires you will be different for everyone.

Go to the beach and listen to (or feel) the waves

I recently did this. I think there’s something grounding about sitting in the sand and realizing how small you are as you sit beside the ocean. Also, I find that it’s easier to talk to God here, to reflect, and to just overall become aware of all the good things in your life that you’re grateful for.

Take yourself out to a fancy restaurant— it’s okay, splurge! You deserve it :)

I haven’t done this one for awhile, but something that makes me really happy is going to a fancy, unique restaurant and treating myself. The last time I did this, I went to an Italian restaurant in Santa Barbara and ordered this amazing pasta with meat sauce. It was amazing :).


The next time you feel that you want to do something nice for yourself and give yourself a little much-deserved love, these are some ideas to help :).
